  FW: more talk on petrol/diesel
Note:
* Indian context
* lighter vein, where not obvious :P (there, I have all bases covered!)

-----Original Message-----

1. The world over, dsl prices are same as petrol
2. GoI subsidises dsl, kerosene, lpg over petrol as these are used for
non travel purposes, i.e. logistics, cooking and cooking respectively.

Agreed that GoI finds it tough to get a scheme to take care of the
misuse of such subsidies, e.g. kerosene chori, and more imp, the misuse
of dsl subsidy by private car owners, it would be simplistic to assume
that this shall continue to be the case forever. Nevertheless, given the
alacrity with which GoI has acted on earlier instances (and on these
mentioned issues over the years), it maybe safe to assume that such
subsidies shall be available to all dsl vehicles, regardless of
class/purpose, for several years to come.

Funny isnt it, that GoI doesn't devise a simple 'voucher' or some such
mechanism by which it can repay entities that are eligible for
subsidies, and price dsl and petrols at 'normal' rates, instead of these
inflated rates.
Petrol, world over is typ <30INR per liter, and dsl, like I mentioned
earlier, is at same rates as petrol.

Petrol might have a higher manu cost, but the refinement is worth the
extra cost. It's a bit like scotch being more expensive than non-scotch.
Another input - Dsl has a higher calorific value. Truly it is more
'power packed' than petrol.
However, the design efforts for dsl engines are higher, leading to
higher manu costs, and higher maint costs - not just cos the components
are expensive, also cos the higher vibration levels of the engine,
translating to earlier service cycles, nuts/bolts require more frequent
tighetning, also wheels/suspension wear out earlier, etc.

Kardi is a good technology, truly. But it steals one very important
aspect away from erstwhile 'naturally aspirated' dsl engines - their
life.
Dsl engines, the old rattly, slow things, these had a life of 2L kms
easily. Even our good old Indica dls.
Petrol engines, and kardi things too, have a life of 1L kms, after which
they need an overhaul (at times, a replacement works cheaper)

> I think Diesel after a while will find better favors towards some

> cost-subsidy (it's direct links to essential-items read

Disagree. Do you not agree that current dsl car owners are misusing the
fuel subsidy? And that perhaps when GoI wakes up to this fact - aided
with the staggering growth in dsl cars, which are surely not lugging
fruits/veggies! - it could perhaps take some corrective action ?!

> Buses, Veg, Groceries and Fruits etc. Inflation will help!)

Talking of inflation, fuel prices will not change drastically for the
next 5 yrs, unless there is a world war of course!

> Also, world-wide the CRDI thing has established itself to give decent

> competition to Petrol...

I fail to understand why ppl put so much fight into dsl engines.
Agree that its 'another' fuel, so good. Then, look at kerosense driven
autorickshaws in Gujarat :P Then there is this whole idea on research,
innovation and the likes. That too is good.
But, to make an engine similar to a much older tech engine, the only
difference being in the fuels used.. Hmm.. Good. But then why similar?
Why not use their uniqueness?!
:P

> Moral - The Japanese win hands down - Agreed or what! :-)

No jap/korean/indian story here. Numbers win, that is all!!

  running costs of petrol diesel vehicles
http://gau7am.googlepages.com/petroldieselcomparov1.1.xls

applies to desi (Indian) scene only :-P

several caveats, primarily being, insurance/regn all taken on thumb rule, even emi. apologies for being lazy, but aisa hi hu main (quoting Veeru in Pyaar to hona hi tha)

coming back to the xls, a clear observation is that in the chosen basket of vehicles, indica xeta is the lowest cost vehicle to run, largely owing to low price, and cheap financing as well.

diesels, with the exception of indica, are steep enough to Question the act of purchase, as theres no cost benefit till you do upwards of 2.5K kms per month.
and thats like 30K kms pa, which means you are killing your vehicle in under 5 yrs!!

  on digicams
understanding a few terms, and putting together the entire set..

megapixels (MP):: (maximum) capacity, in pixels, of the digital sensor
   higher is typ. better, but anything above 4M is 'usable' by most standards.

zoom:: optical zoom is the 'real' zoom avl on the cam. donot worry about digital zoom for now.
   3X / 4X is typ. avl presently. for larger zoom numbers, a very steady hand is required, and for most requirements, we can do with 3X zoom.

speed:: no, this is not a quoted term. but the speed of the camera helps you figure - how quickly can you take a photo (right from starting the camera), how soon can you take the next photo
the flow of the 'photo' is::
sensor->internal buffer->digital memory (sd/cf card)

some params that affect::
* MP - the larger the photo, longer the time taken to move it from sensor onto the memory
* buffer siz - a larger internal buffer helps parallelise (if the circuitry allows for that!)
* speed of the memory card - a faster card helps read/write faster!

other noteworthy features::
* image stabilisation / anti shake
* inbuilt image optimisation / crude editing features
* higher ISO ratings
* faster circuitry

other tips::
* several 5MP models avl in the Indian market
* several models using AA batteries, can use disposable units avl freely upto 3000m in a few geographies
    careful on how many AA batteries the camera uses!
* checkout sample fotos, contemporary functionalities on offer
* in these days of good quality products, guarantees are not 'required', but they dont hurt much
* Dubai shopping fest is a good time/place to buy electronics, look for bundled offers - case+batteries, charger+sd card, etc.

  bina brush
.. office!!

change of habit: a dentist suggested this cleaning routine::
* brush prior to sleeping at night
* brush post morning breakfast
philosophy being - a brushing protects you for 12hrs typically.

this bit works well, trust me!
only problem is in adaptation, esp for forgetful chaps like me ;)
--

some other tips
* donot use a gel toothpaste, 'white toothpastes' are better
* you dont need too much of toothpaste for a brushing!
* cold/sweet items shouldnt give sensation to the teeth, else problems exist!

on prioritisation:

priority, it seems, doesnt quite receive the importance (pun avoided!) that it rightfully deserves.

i have noticed this at several instances, be it in a conversation (the most glaring example of 'lack of prioritising'), a communication (email / writeup / blog) or even systems - user interfaces, system's internal design etc.

and all it takes is perhaps that one blank moment..

where you reflect. ponder. and quite frankly, it doesnt take a lot to get started. its better to not 'start'. you should just linger.. after all that homework on the topic that you are working on, the ideas are all there, like froth atop beer.. or to use a more domestic example - like cream (malai) atop milk

you just need to stay put for that one moment.. and the idea just hits out at you. and then all you need is a pen / keyboard.. and keep typing.

like i am doing :)

hope you liked it, and even if otherwise, thanks for your patience !!
